What if? Facing the fears that keeps us from going

Apr 22, 2025

Have you ever felt that tug in your heart to go—somewhere new, somewhere unknown—but your head quickly followed up with, “What if?”

What if I’m not good enough?
What if I can’t raise the money?
What if it’s uncomfortable, or I mess up, or I don’t make a difference?

If those thoughts sound familiar, you’re not alone.

Almost every person who has ever said yes to a short-term mission trip has faced those very
same questions. The truth is: stepping into something unknown is supposed to feel uncomfortable. That’s often how God grows us most.

Let’s look at a few of those “what ifs” together:

What if I’m not qualified?
Perfect. God isn’t looking for the most talented, the best speakers, or the most seasoned missionaries—He’s looking for the willing. If you love people and you’re willing to serve, you’re qualified. He’ll equip you as you go.

What if I can’t raise the funds?
You don’t have to do it alone. So many people in your life would love to be part of what God is doing—even if they can’t go themselves. Fundraising isn’t begging—it’s inviting others into the mission. And God always provides in the most surprising ways.

What if I can’t speak the language?
Love doesn’t need translation. Smiles, hugs, games, laughter—these things speak louder than words. You’ll likely be amazed at how much you can communicate without saying much at all. Plus, all our mission partners provide translators to go along with our teams.

What if I’m uncomfortable or overwhelmed?
You might be. But comfort has never been the goal. Growth happens in the stretch. And the beauty you’ll experience—the joy in a child’s face, the laughter of new friendships, the power of worship in another language—will far outweigh the discomfort.

What if I don’t make a difference?
You might not see the full impact—but trust this: your presence matters. Just showing up, loving well, and being part of something bigger than yourself leaves a lasting mark on the people you serve and on your own heart.

If you feel God tugging you toward something unfamiliar, don’t let fear be the thing that keeps you from going. Be bold enough to ask, “What if I say yes?”

What if you see God move in a way you’ve never experienced before?
What if you build friendships that change your life?
What if this one step grows your faith more than years of comfort ever could?

You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just take the first step. Ask questions. Pray. Talk to someone who has gone before you. And when the time comes, say yes.

God doesn’t need perfect people. He’s just looking for hearts that are willing.

Are you ready to trust Him with your “what if?”

Every Child Deserves to Be Warm This Winter

Every Child Deserves to Be Warm This Winter Winter in Romania is harsh. Temperatures drop well below freezing, and the biting wind cuts through anything that isn't thick and protective. For most of us, bundling up in a warm coat is second nature. But for the children...
